What are gouache paints?

Since its first uses in the 18th-century, gouache is used to create vibrant works of art. The paint behaves similarly to watercolour, yet brings the opacity of acrylic. Individual paint colours are either a mixture of natural or synthetic pigments, with some shades including chalk.
