Built by Us
Client:
Personal work
Project:
Work alongside photographer Alice Louisa to create a collaborative artwork inspired by the community of Old Northam Road in Southampton, UK, to exhibit at ZEST’s ‘Roadmap’ exhibition.
Made using maple woodblocks, this artwork grew from Alice’s conversations with people who live, work, and provide community services in the area. Each person or community project featured is represented by a portrait and a painted flower, from Harvey, founder of Ropewalk Community Garden, to James from Caustic Bloom, whose work helps rewild the city’s verges.
‘Built by Us’ celebrates the people who have shaped this area into what it is today.
Our piece was part of ZEST’s Roadmap exhibition, which took place alongside a community event featuring a day of free workshops and food for all who attended. By closing Northam Road and its car park, we were able to take over the street and create space for families to enjoy large chalk drawings, make eco seed bombs, paint rocks, and more.
